During the past 35 years I have collected antique and collectible signed and unsigned costume and fine jewelry and through this experience I have found many ways to find and buy the most amazing pieces and collectibles, with values much higher than what I paid.
My secrets tested and worked and as a result I have a most extraordinary collection of books signed and pieces dating from the 1800s to the present guy. I have gotten signed and unsigned Miriam Haskell (some of which were developed to Coco Chanel and has even been presented at Chanel Print ads from the late 1930s and '40s), Schiaparelli, Pennino, McClelland-Barclay, Alfred Philippe for Trifari, DeMario, and more of the most sought after names in the age and gender of vintage jewelry.
There are three secrets they use to buy pieces so desirable.
The first secret is to align myself with companies that sell household goods of the deceased. I create relationships with the owners of these companies and ask if you can inspect all jewelry (either costume or fine) before the date of sale of goods. In exchange they help publicize on sale soon by notifying the antique dealers, owners of retail stores and specialty shops that can be in the market for large furniture, carpets and accessories. A farm disposal companies such support is invaluable, as it increases their chances of getting better than fair market value as they are going to sell to resellers. A second part of this secret and it also works with auctioneers to make the auction house in general and personal items. Once have developed these relationships, to be called before an auction and sell to you before the auction preview to a very cheap box.
The second secret is aligned with the owners of pawnshop. They do not sell jewelry that they really do not have intrinsic value but offer a bulk price for jewelry brought by the people and for a small profit selling to me. I purchased the most impressive pieces in this way. A person who unfortunately has beaten a rough spot and cash requirements and usually clean all your drawers which may be a lot of good, but most likely more jewelry. The lender knows that they have an immediate sale to me each and every costume jewelry and more likely to sell it to me as a big box. The person needing the money he earns, earns a pawnshop and really win, because many of the items have been in the family for years and may date to the late 30s or older. Some may be rubbish, but there is always at least one or two pieces which made the transaction a success.
The third secret and has the tact and sensitivity when a widow or children of a relative who died recently is trying to move and feel the need to donate or "clean up" their personal belongings and affections. The whole family from me through an ad running in the local newspaper or magazine "Pennysaver" claiming that pay cash for any costume jewelry. The family will call and I always give a price more than fair for the items you have and they are happy and have found wonderful treasures to add to my collection.
However, after some years of use to people over the secrets that only come to know as the "jewelry lady" and the calls always come to your selection jewelry continue getting better.
